Vagit Alekperov

Vagit Alekperov was born on September 1,1950 in the Azerbaijan capital of Baku into the family of a civil servant.
Upon graduating from a secondary school, he entered the Baku Institute of Oil and Chemistry and graduated from it in 1974 with a diploma of engineer specialized in technology and complex automation of oil extraction process.
From 1974-1979, he worked at the oil extracting association Kaspmorneft, at first as an operator, then as an engineer, and finally, as a deputy head of the enterprise.
Since 1979, Alekperov’s life has been tightly associated with the development of Western Siberia. Working as a deputy director-general of two industrial associations Surgutneftgaz and Bashneft, he contributed greatly to the shaping of the Soviet school of oil extraction.
In 1984, Alekperov was elected the First Director-General of one of Siberia’s most promising oil associations Kogalymneftgaz. He has been always proud of the Governments awards received at that time, the Order – Badge of Honour and the Medal «For developing the Oil and Gas Complex of Siberia».
In 1990, Alelperov was transferred to Moscow to become the youngest deputy Minister of Oil and Gas Industries of the USSR. Earlier such a young person never had been placed so high in the industry. During the painstaking period of reorganisation, it was Alekperov who practically mastered the oil industry of the country.
Late in 1991 the oil concern Lukoil was created, and then transformed into the joint stock company «Oil Company «Lukoil».
Lukoil is the biggest oil company in Russia. It was established in April 1993 by a special Resolution of the Russian Government in conformity with a Decree signed by president Yeltsin. The government appointed Alekperov President of Lukoil.
The Company includes Western Siberia’s three major oil extracting associations Lukoil-Kogalymneftgaz, Lukoil-Langepasneftgaz and Lukoil-Uraineftgaz extracting together a quarter of oil in Western Siberia and one sixth of all oil produced by Russia.
The Company also includes two major refineries Lukoil-Permneftorgsintez and Lukoil-Volgogradneftpererabotka.
In 1993, they processed about 19 million tonnes of crude,produced about 2.5 million tonnes of petroleum, 4.3 million tonnes of diesel fuel and 5.3 million tonnes of mazut. Lukoil produced 48.8 million tonnes of crude oil and 2225.8 million tonnes of side gas in 1993. About 20 per cent of Russia’s industrial power are situated in the zone of fuel supplies coming from Lukoil. In 1993, the Company sold about 11 million tonnes of oil products. Lukoil owns 112 oil depots and about 700 filling stations capable of selling over 15 milion tonnes of oil products a year.
The Company is building new and modernizing the existing oil depots. Its filling stations are being equipped with upto-date automation systems. They have started offering new services.
