Yuri Agapov was born on December 13,1958 in the Byelorussian settlement of Ros.
Upon graduating from a secondary school in 1975, he entered the Credit and Economics department of the Moscow Financial Institute. He graduated from the institute and entered its post graduation courses. In November 1984, Agapov defended his thesis devoted to problems of short-term crediting of industrial enterprises and received his candidate degree in Economics.
Upon defending the thesis, Agapov began working as a senior researcher at the АН-Union Research and Projection Institute for Automated Systems of Management.
In 1988, Agapov started to realize his ambition to establish a bank.
He registered his Credo Bank on March 27,1989. The following year was something special for Agapov. In a bid to strengthen his positions, he contacted officials of the State Planning Committee of the USSR, and was busy preparing a lot of different documents.
At present, the Credo Bank has developed into one of the largest Russian commercial banks, holding a leading position on the Russian market.
As of January 1,1994, the statutory capital of Credo Bank, consisting to considerable extent of foreign currency, surpassed 23 billion roubles, the balance total reached 784.2 billion roubles. As of May 1994, the hard currency assets of the Bank surpassed 1.2 trillion roubles. Credo Bank was the first on the CIS territory to be granted on May 16,1990, with the General License giving the right to conduct hard currency transactions, and thus had paved the way for other Russian commercial banks.
Credo Bank was the first Russian bank to have issued the Visa credit cards. It pioneered the “plastic money” market, which was absolutely new for this country, and still remains its outspoken leader. The Bank established and keeps under control the largest in Russia processing company United Card System.
The Bank has established a wide network abroad opening 54 correspondent accounts and has won the reputation of a reliable partner in international banking and financial circles.
Its own banking network includes 27 affiliates located in industrial and financial centres of Russia.
Agapov was the President of the Association of Commercial Banks of the USSR. In 1993, the Russian Biographical Institute named him the Man of the Year among industrialists and bankers.
